Eugenie and I have been tirelessly updating, formating, coding, and collapsing all our art and design from the last 10 years into one behemoth site. Through this new website, we have combined the fine art, design, wood working, store and consulting into one user friendly website. Its a wordpress format we customized intensely. Thus, this blog will no longer be updated. Our new website is a Blog and Studio portfolio site. I'll be keeping this blog(7609studio.blogspot.com) up for about a year for archiving purposes.

In celebration of this new web launch, we are also offering 20% off all prints for the month of June. We have also printed the last 2 paper pieces as giclees from the "I Dream of" series that was debiuted in Tokyo, Japan in November 2010, and just last month, heavily featured in the most recent Hi•Fructose Magazine.

"Mental Dilemma Dinner Party" - 12' x 5' installation

Last Saturday I had an opening at the Compound Gallery here in Portland, OR. It featured a 12' x 5' piece made of 60 12" x 12" individual ones. The backgrounds were all new designs I created and burnt onto silk screens, painted them over, then sanded out the layers. Conceptually this about my psyche and techniques represented in fragmented realities.

Last Friday night, we hosted along with over a dozen other studios in the building, an open house event. It seemed like well over 300 people came through that evening. In a rare opportunity to open my doors to the public, it was surreal as much as it was a pleasure to meet numerous fans, and guests. A "good time: band of 10 even rocked the entire night right down the hall from us. Dj's, kegs, wine, art and performance was brimming all around the building.

If you live or find yourself in Portland, OR on Friday, June 11th, my building will be hosting an Open Studio event. Over 20 artists, designers, and crafts people will be opening their doors to the public for a night of art, wine, food and cheer. Located at the historic North Coast Seed Building and built in 1911, it has a wonderfully rich history. The original scales, freight elevator and old growth timber beams proliferate the units. If you are fan of local art, design and architecture I invite you to check out the other studios, and say hi.

Before I begin a new body of work, I'll develop a color family on the computer and later create the dozens of colors to keep a graphic color harmony with all the works based on those selected pantones. Looking at some of these jars reminds me how much my pallete has changed, darker, softer, and less saturated. I suppose it's an unconcious affect living in the NW for several years now.

upon moving into the new studio I finally organize my rare collection. I came upon these at my art school senior year. there was a 15' wide closet filed balls to walls with thousands of these things. and get this...they were going to throw them away. so my wife and I pilaged the collection withas much as we can carry. having them organized now, I released the hounds and reintroduced these back into my recent work.

if you ate scratching your head, these are those little rub off letters you'll find at art stores. except my collection is macho city, with dingbats, patterns, and NUMEROUS fonts.

LA solo show in 2 weeks

I was very close to becoming victim of an art buying scam

last week i was very close to being scammed for thousands of dollars. someone expressed interest in buying one of my pieces, coincidently, it was available, for the right price and right person. he had written the title, and all other pertinent information in the email. the check was mailed and things were smoothly moving forward. when the check arrived i let the buyer know, and thats when the weirdness started. first, my gut felt the check was shaky to the touch and look. second, when he(or she, or an entire asshole collective, who fucking knows)found out the check arrived i was instructed with a bunch of eccentric shipping directions and the check had been written for twice the amount. he had instructed to wire the extra money to his "shipper" through western union. he claimed he was moving to london and had a family friend taking care of all his moving affairs.

thats the scam, and kinda clever. you take your cut for the sale of the piece after the check clears and wire the rest. several days later your fucked and the confidence man now has a wad of cleaned cash.

fortunately, my bank is very aggressive with holding checks and verifying funds over several days. my manager was on this every day with the bank making sure it was legit.

We received today an email from one of our members who was contacted by “Stan.” Though we cannot read the replies written by artist Arline, the chain of messages she received reveal the stereotype temptations proffered by the fraudulent schemers who plague many of the internet sites exhibiting art for sale. Member Arline wrote:

I have had email messages from a "Stan Thomas" with an inquiry about buying one of my paintings that is on artlanow website. It is a scam. He wants to send a certified check (I've heard that before), and pay the shipping himself to a foreign country. He didn't say which one. Asked for my address and phone number. I replied, saying that I’d never ever sell a piece to a buyer who did not see it personally. He answered to tell me his shipper would inspect it, and could I send my address and phone number. (Yeah, right). I haven't yet let on that I know it's a scam. I just may confuse him some more. I'll forward his messages to you. You'll note that his grasp of the English language is off. That was the first clue.

New Massive Attack Video - "Splitting the Atom"

For me its just been way to long since a new massive attack album. Their "Heligoland" demonstrates a ton of creative growth, and yet still gives a nod to their older work, respectively. This video, directed by Edouard Salier, is simply stunning. I feel the band's integrity choosing progressive directors and very unique video direction/concept just makes this band that much better, and one of the best bands out there today. I've watched this numerous times now, and every time i find something new in this cold apocalypse. The video compliments the cold feeling and vacant noise on the track beautifully.

A project like this has been on my to do list for a long time. Now having completed it, I'm sure to be doing some more in the future. I simply am really stunned by the quality and very proud to offer these screen prints. A lot of love and details were put into these, especially the hand finished series. There are 3 unique editions each with different colors. Print 1 is ONLY the screens, 17 ltd. editions,$150. Print 2 has a hand finished washed acrylic background, 7 ltd. editions, $200. FIFTY 24PDX Gallery presents to you a group show for the months of December and January featuring some of the best visual artists Portland has to offer. “Pioneers” will feature a diverse body of work from some of Portland's biggest names. While these talented artists vary in style, medium and message, the common thread that binds them together is the City of Roses.

“Pioneers” runs December 3rd-January 31st 2009.

Ian Anderson - Ian Michael Anderson has been a Portland resident for over three years, originally hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah. Much of his work is based on subconscious narratives in which a sort of personal mythology is manifested with few ties to the natural world, if only through metaphor.

Craig Brown - Craig Brown is a tattoo artist and painter. He works at Historic Tattoo. His paintings are bold, colorful and inspired by his craft in tattoo.

Guy Burwell – Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, he started his commercial art career providing illustration for local newspapers, murals in nightclubs, and posters for underground rock clubs. Moving to Portland provided a more dynamic, progressive and supportive artistic landscape and his work flourished. His client list is impressive and includes: Flight of the Conchords, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, K2 Snowboards, Dark Horse Comics, Nemo Design and Guitar Hero, just to name a few.

Adam Crispin – Adam graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1997. Adam moved to Portland Oregon in 2005 and continues to develop in the Pearl District, where he focuses on the abstract while retaining an element of landscape.

Blaine Fontana – Blaine was born in Seattle, WA and raised on Bainbridge Island. In 2003 Blaine left hisArt Direction position for the title of self – employed artist and designer. He is represented in numerous galleries across the United States. His work can be described as “Urban-Organic Contemporary Surrealism” Paintings.

Mark McCormick – Mark has been riding bikes, drinking beer and listening to metal while creating posters and illustrations since 2003 or so. He is an illustrator, graphic designer and screen-printer now based in Brooklyn, NY although he grew up in Oregon and used to call Portland home.

Ashley Montague - Ashley Montague has worked in the medium of acrylics and mixed media techniques since his youth. His paintings are direct extensions of his ideas and feelings, sometimes trailing concepts for weeks. He currently works and resides in NE Portland, OR at his home studio.

Martin Ontiveros - Martin is a self described painter and a legend living in Portland, Oregon. He has produced posters for the Portland metal band Red Fang, shown work at Giant Robot, and provided cover art for Willamette Week and Portland Mercury.

Jesse Reno - Jesse Reno was born in 1974 in Teaneck, NJ and now lives and works in his home studio in Portland, Oregon. He is a prolific painter and muralist and also works as an illustrator and designer. His work explores his personal mythology and often references the connection between humans and nature.

Joe Shea - Shea was influenced at an early age by the art of the Catholic Church, classic sci-fi film, the pride of the Boston Celtics, and the music and posters of punk rock. His work is always handmade in mixed media with a recycled twist, combining influences of folk art, assemblage art, and all forms of street art.

Clae Welch – Clae Welch is a tattooist, painter and printmaker originally from the Bay Area. He now works out of his own studio, Historic Tattoo in South East Portland. His tattoo work has been featured with great praise in the following magazines: International tattoo, Northwest Tattoo and Tattoo Revue.

I'm thrilled to announce another creative endeavor to Fontana Studios. I was recently asked to be the curator of 19TEN. A private events space in North Portland, OR. Adjoind to The Hop & Vine, we will be hosting monthly art shows showcasing some of the Northwest's brightest and avant garde visual artists.

Zach Johsen's newest body of work deals with the human form and how it interacts with outside influences.. most notably the pull of nature and the world of ghosts and unseen energies. Much of his work implies an act of violence or revulsion amongst something cute and cuddly. It is a sea of stuffed animals filled with cacti. It is a lollipop that tastes like tar and oil. It is a moment of pure revelation while drinking your morning coffee or tea. It is a sudden realization that everything we deal with on a day to day isn't all that there is. That there is in fact, so much more around us if we open our senses to it.

MY NAME IS did a very flattering interview/feature on my art, and i was lucky enough to also get the cover. this publication is more book than magazine. european publishing and culture is a decade ahead of us here in the states. a quarterly "mag" thats an 1" thick featuring contemporary artists from "the movement" i was honored by their 20 page feature and being in company of several other visionaries.

The last 2 months have been a roller coaster. Its been hard to publish on the blog due to some exciting developments that needed special attention.

Over the past months, I have been keeping busy with companies like Band Merch, Arbor Snowboards, Armada Skis, Nike Basketball Projects, and the merger of a motion graphics/film/editing studio with my own graphic studio LV8. SUBMERGE is now a division of LV8 that will offer cutting edge solutions to broadcast media/film. I'll be posting demo reels of numerous SUBMERGE projects on LV8 in the near future. We are in the middle of a large project that should debut next year on television.

Lastly, there will be 2 product launches before the end of the year that I am especially proud of and excited for. I can't name the companies because that would give it away, so, stay tuned for official updates through my newsletter.

New Painting in Honor of my stepfather

Just wrapped up this painting in honor of my recently departed stepfather. A Lakota Indian, crows were a significant and spiritual part of his life. I had started this painting while he was still alive but during its process, my stepfather left and the painting began to take on a whole new life and meaning. The crow feathers were a last addition, originally they were to be butterflies.

Nestkeepers Completed

Its exactly 2 years to the day when I completed the first 8 of these, I have finally completed the remainder 22. These were done with an Otis Alumni brother, Daniel Garcia from the Toy department. I sculpted the prototype, and then he applied his talents with the wax pen on the second cast, then the 2 of us casted the finals together. I then hand painted each one and added sculptural elements like manzanita branches, birds, nests etc., to make each one totally unique. Its a solid silicon cast, each one is about 5" tall - 10" tall.

I've also posted the painting my little darlings were inspired by.

Dan Hopkins Collection Show

Big Up Magazine Feature

I might be a little delayed on this news, but a great magazine that features the counter culture world did a little article on my work a 2 months ago. I was really surprised to see the quality of the paper stock in this zine and generous image sizing. Big Up is a bi-monthly magazine, so this issue still might be on shelves. A spontaneous trip to the river

Our neighbors dragged us out of the house on Sunday just when I was going to work in the studio. I'm glad they did. 30 minutes away from portland we arrived on the Washougal river at this gorgeous lagoon. The dogs had a blast, Athena, our chihuahua learned to swim for the first time. This place was a little slice of paradise on a perfect Sunday.

Yesterday was too damn swampy to get anything done in the studio(105 degrees in portland)so at the last minute I decided to create a wood installation @ together gallery while enjoying some AC. The install reflects the theme of the show and the vibe of the gallery. Looks like a wood quilt, and will now be permanently displayed @ together gallery. The wood bonsai is a sculpture done by my brother the architect guru.

I'm speechless. The original Tron was a groundbreaking film that did poorly in theaters but quickly became a cult classic. It was a couple years ago I read they were doing a NEW film, NOT a remake. Its been painful knowing they're working on this and not seeing any trailers. This was debuted at the comic con last week. It looks like another ground breaking film, and have read they are using the same camera/technique as in James Camerons "Avatar". Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, the film Avatar will be revolutionizing the film industry and the VFX that have been created. Only a handful of directors and producers have seen the footage and can't believe what they see.

I'm also BIG fan of electronic music so when a recent Tweet popped up last night from @moodgadget recordings promoting a free app that streams all Ghostly INTL music I immediately downloaded it. My wife came across this image the other day. This says so many historically beautiful yet awkwardly haunting stories. Who ever the artist was who created this gets my genius of the year award. I'm especially attached to this since I have a life scale faux version of one of those Qin dynasty terracota soldiers. It reminds me to appreciate individuality and the people who surround you who enrich your life.

Several months back I was exposed to the Society6 website through one of my gallerists. It took me a second to understand the vision to this site, but with a little time and abstract thinking it is now my favorite creative networking site out there. What sets them apart from all others is that they have an exceedingly accessible grant system that you can apply for and garnish nominations through the network. They go a step further with hosting some of the brightest and progessive studios, companies and publications offering a leg up to aspiring creatives. Now what really puts this site over the top is the seamless interface and design. Its also generous with image size content, a polarization from numerous others with snooty miniscule icons, artwork and typography. I have discovered so many unseen talent through their unique chart system. Users "promote" posts that will after a certain number of votes land them on the home page or one of the coveted "curators" section.

Since making my new home in Portland, OR about 7 months ago, the local art walks have been a regularity for me every month. With 3 walks within a week of each other, by the last one one I'm pretty exhausted but brimming with inspiration.

First, is the last thursday in NE on NE Alberta. This is actually more street fair than artwalk, far more bohemian, vibrant and DIY. The city closes the street with hundreds of vendors on about 10 blocks. One of the must go to galleries is the Together Gallery. They show a lot of local talent and display mostly progressive folk art. Seth and Timothy, both brilliant artists, are genuine dudes who run a very passionatte gallery. I love how anyone can just pick a squat and sell their art or crafts on the sidewalk.

The second, first friday, takes place in the Pearl District in downtown. This has more of the conservative, bigger and "safer" galleries. Where it does host a lot of what i call "sofa art", photography and other respectful openings, there are a few gems down there. Upper Playground PDX, Compound Gallery, Igloo Gallery.

Lastly is first friday. Held on E Burnside, this hosts numerous little boutiques, and several galleries with a young, experimental, and playful vibe. One of my regular galleries I frequent is the Breeze Block Gallery. Paige, the owner and curator sells a handful, but potent art & graff related products. She is always a delight to see and is the reel deal when she displays here passion for the arts.

I'll be doing my best from now on to show the best and brightest art from the future artwalks. But for now, I'd like to share some of the secret talent that resides here. On my first walks I was really blown away by the integrity many posses. Coming from LA, I was very used to artists who are to enveloped in the notoriety and fame. I don't find that with the local scene, it and it is a welcomed breath of fresh air. Below are some of the artists I've been taken back by.

VANS OFF THE WALL painting

Finally wrapped up the painting to the private book release party at Vans HQ. The book showcase several decades of "athletes" and art under the iconic shoe company and OTW logo. They asked a handful of artists who have been involved in previous Vans art projects to contribute a piece and their intrepetation of the logo and the influence it had on their lives. I chose to represent the first vans shoe I wore when shredding on my bmx, freestyle bike or skating(the blue/yellow checker slip on in front). Since then I have worn numerous slip ons as my daily shoe. I also designed a bunch in the painting that I would like to wear.

The Process of a Commission

Recently a high school friend contacted me after we hadn't spoke or seen each other in over 13 years. He and his wife were very interested in a painting for their house. Never having commissioned a painting especially for themselves, I thought it would make an engaging post on this process, and as a reference for others in the future.

Their original interest and inspiration for the considered piece was this small digital piece i did back in 2007 for the "taxonomy animalia" show at the limited addiction gallery(now dave b smith gallery).

What followed was a lengthy approval process that required the finish painted to be done in a way I had never painted before. They wanted a 77" x 33" painted piece but done in the style of the digital painting. It was the background graphics and the transparency effect that they really admired. This posed a major technical challenge when it came time to render the bird which they had expressed to be a phoenix instead. We started with some digital comps and searching for the perfect bird reference.

At this point the clients were satisfied how the comp was feeling and i began stretching, building and prepping the painting:

I would occasionally update them with process photos as i went along in the work:

At this point I felt the background was rich and compelling and needed no further work. This was a crucial commitment since the nature of this process allowed no further "back rendering" because of the phoenix transparency effect. Once I began the phoenix there would be no command Z.

A month had past at this point and i was never thrilled about the original phoenix reference. I found that Osprey's were a solid reference that portrayed a bird with a robust presence and anatomy:

I tried to sketch out my own version of that bird but it never really moved me, instead, I found this dynamic eagle shot, and sketched a phoenix version of this eagle. This was the finally approval, and the clients like me, were now very satisfied with the composition/position of the bird:

The only last three minor changes that were requested that the talons/legs be more relaxed, that the tail feathers be more narrow and longer, and the the frill on top of the head be moved forward a bit. I then proceeded to render most of this phoenix with a very small #1 round brush and a couple of other old brushes i modified to create intense texture and form.

The Glue Network benefit Mural at MAGIC
I just got back last night from 4 exhausting days in VegASS. I joined 5 other very talented artists, J. Shea, Tommii Lim, Joshua Clay, Serge Gay Jr., and Kelli Murray, to create a 24' x 8' mural that was themed around "Hope". After nurmerous sketches and concepts we settled on a surreal idea that displayed towering "Hope Farmers" over a grand rolling landscape. Besides the great cause and exposure for the glue network we raised $15k and sold the mural to the CEO of Kangol. A Vegas charity group, stand up for kids was the main recepient who empowers, helps and stabilizes homeless youth across the country.

SARU EP ALBUM ART

Long time friend and downtempo legend "SARU" contacted me about creating his next album art. For those of you who don't know about Saru, he was one of the original progressive artists of downtempo music for Shadow Records that launched numerous talents like DJ Krush. RAZIA'S SHADOW ALBUM ART

i've recently completed my first and very ambitious album cover/booklet project. the album project, "Razia's Shadow" is ambitious in its production and number of musicians on the album. i was asked to create a character of each band member as their alter ego in this fantastic story of 14 or so members. they each act out their character in their song. i took inspiration from ralph steadman, but added an anthropology field journal approach to it with the neutral tones and sepia backgrounds.

one of my most missed and favorite activities in Long Beach, is beach cruising. this IS beach cruiser country, it always cracks me up seeing fixed gear bikes here. after saving up, i finally got the bike i've wanted for years. this was one of the first cruisers i saw at FELT's warehouse when i began working with them over 3 years ago. what is so great about FELT cruisers is that they are extremely well designed and made, and they always portray a great concept for each bike...

i know its a cruddy photo, i'll take a better one later. that ring below is my wedding ring. we had the rings commissioned by our good friend and talented designer, jill redman of blue poppy jewelry. both rings have an ebony wood inlay, with 2 custom colors/spice resin pours and a significant number of dots that reflect our lucky numbers. both are made of silver. we don't believe in diamonds, and other rocks because of the volatile history and uncertainty that they were processed legally. it was more important for us to know that these are 2 completely unique rings and there are none others like them in the world.

a while back i posted a video of the studio after we had just set it up after the move. we have made many changes and expansions over the last 6 months that have created a more harmonious work area and permanence. the first expansion was to move the office into an adjacent room with all windows. the vacant space was then used to have a giant "dry" table to handle orders and process/prep our prints and products. we also moved all my boy toys out of painting area to the newly created wood shop in the garage. i built a new wall in the garage to create the space. this has made it so much safer to work with dust and chemicals away from my paintings...

we are still plowing through our new site here, they always become so much work than anticipated. looks like more the end of october for the public release. we are also working on more prints that will go along with the release. many of the store orders were delayed a bit, something we have finally remedied, they are now handled more efficiently, even the fan kits are now caught up and ahead of schedule. for those of you who ordered fan kits before, during and a little after the big move in may, you'll be receiving a compensation gift for you wonderful patience.

in the mean time, below is a new piece and simalar works of the series is to come. this series is a revisit of the sqft body of work from back in november 2006. this is available in the blaine fontana store. a 12" x 12" x 2" 1/1 original giclee on board with a beautiful 1/8" layer of poured resin.

my next solo show(and last one for quite some time) is coming through great, some very different work, the inspiration around me here in the forest is abundant and motivating. "Seasonal Detritus" will be opening on august 31st, 6 - 10 pm at the LINEAGE GALLERY in philadelphia, PA. it will be up for about 3 weeks. the new body of work will be available for preview after wednesday. to view this link, you'll need to contact the lineage gallery site...

we are going through some cosmetic/directional changes and new additions here at the studio, recently we just retired the totembookmedia.com url and have moved permanently to BLAINEFONTANA.COM. the current site is there now, we are looking forward to creating a new site first thing in september that will feature an array of new prints, products and original pieces only available on blainefontana.com. along with this will be another new site created solely to dedicate the design and commercial projects that have never been seen publicly. this new "design" site will feature countless projects that my studio and partners have produced over the last 4-5 years along with a new additional direction my studio is expanding on and adding. we hope that both these behemoths will be live by the end of september.

this blog will still remain as my more personal area for fans and friends to access the process of work, new developments, products and other intimate ongoings of my fine art studio.
